BMW E30 M3 Unitron DTM 1991 Kelleners
Another custom build using a decal set complete made myself, although Nikdraw sells/sold this decal set as well. I believe mine is more accurate, considering a number of details: my version of the “Skil” logo is accurate for 1991, the proportions in my decal set are more accurate - especially the race numbers are bigger and centered in the number panel, the “Unitron” logo slash extends all the way into the red stripe on the underside of the door, all reference photos I found show the car with yellow headlights so I adjusted that as well. The donor model is an Autoart 1992 “Fina” Cecotto but could easily also have been an Autoart white plain body model (good luck finding those at an affordable price these days). This model is a perfect fit for the 1991 M3 I built : wheels, mirrors, rear spoiler and … roll cage!
Both Autoart and Minichamps have released a 1:18 model of the same 1992 “Fina” Cecotto car. The biggest difference is the roll cage. Minichamps used the more complex M3 Evo roll cage which is accurate for 1992 and 1993. Autoart used the one that was accurate only up to 1991. Some privateers still raced with the older cars and roll cages beyond 1991 … but not Cecotto! Boo boo by Autoart here. No worries: Minichamps made the same mistake (the other way around) when they released Cor Euser’s 1991 Marlboro liveried DTM E30 M3 with the Evo roll cage.
Modifications on the car include changing the safety harness from blue to red, moving the pod on the roof all the way to the front and painting both bumpers red. The red middle/lower stripes/sections are entirely decaled. I love these privateer cars that on the one hand plaster sponsor logo’s all over the place but on the other hand manage to have a resulting overall livery that is still attractive. A big part of the attraction on this one is the use of only red and black on a white background. Love it!
